Unity of Believers by Mairos of Zimbabwe
UNITY OF BELIEVERS by Mairos
Genesis 11:6 And the LORD said, Behold the people are one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they imagined to do.
Unity is usually defined as oneness. It is having one vision, one purpose or one mind. The opening scripture above clearly shows what unity is among the descendants of Noah. In fact, it is God Himself who spoke those words saying: Behold, the people are one, and they have all one language. The key phrases that bring out the concept of unity in this scripture are: the people are one and they have all one language. It is easy to see that the key word is one. Thus, where unity is, oneness is there.
Unity is power. There is an old saying which reads, “United we stand, but divided we fall.” The saying goes to show the strength which is associated with unity. In addition to strength, unity of the descendants of Noah enabled them to achieve what they had purposed to do. They had purposed to build the tower of Babel. Had it not been God who intercepted their plan to build a tower that reached to the heaven, they were surely going to achieve their goal. God himself confessed that “now nothing will be restrained them, which they imagined to do.” In other words, God was saying that their unity or oneness was strong enough to help them achieve their goal.
Unity of believers brings strength, peace, and accomplishment of those things they set out to do. If believers are united, the enemy which is the devil is kept out of bounds in our lives, in our families and in our churches. If those descendants of Noah, though going against the decree of God of multiplying and spreading on the earth, could achieve their goal without God’s support, how much are we believers, united by the Spirit of God in the bond of peace, going to achieve in the work of God?
It is important that we make a serious commitment to seek, do and say that which unifies and edifies believers. And refrain from all that which causes strife and division.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I now see and understand why the Lord Jesus prayed that we may be one, even as thou art one. Unity gives us power and peace. I pray that your Holy Spirit will keep us in unity as believers the Lord returns. AMEN.
