SETTING EXAMPLES
Examples are easier ways to teach someone. We all love examples because they become motivational points. The concern is that we do not have many examples to follow as far as our faith is concerned. The apostle Paul in Philippians 4: 9 comes out in the open to invite his audience to take him as an example. The is a very high level of maturity in the faith.
The immediate context is found in chapter 3:17 of the same book. Brothers join in imitating me and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. He is saying there are people who have already copied his way of life, and they are a good example to follow.
People who serve as good examples are those who are; consistent, mature, knowledgeable, and son. Paul in our text says there are things that the church in Philippi could have learnt from Paul. This means that he was a good teacher to the church, teachers are known to be consistent because they have to repeat certain things over and over. He also says if there are things, they have received from him. The idea is that of influencing them in a particular direction. It also means that he was a good leader who led them well. The next statement he uses is that they should practice what they have heard him say to them. He said something of value. If you are to influence people speak of things that are of value, say them with passion and conviction because they are issues to do with death and life. He then seals it with what people have seen in his life. This means that he lived an open life that the others were able to see. In this case the seeing by others is the evaluation of a life to see how that life has been a source of encouragement.
The amazing thing is when you follow the examples of godly people, the results are just heartwarming. The God of peace will be with you. What is more comforting to know in this troubled world that the fact that the God of peace is with you? This is hope for the Christian that God will be with His people and give them peace. Every Christian should seek to be a good example in every way. We can follow the example of other believers who are mature in their faith or those who have gone ahead of us into glory. We must be aware that there are other people who are looking up to us.
Prayer: Dear Lord help me to find good examples that I may follow, people that will influence my life of faith and help me to be a good example to others also.
